We have priorities in our lives. They may be career or family or? Where is God on my priority list?
Fr. Soney then explains three passages from the Bible, first read aloud by Jennifer Rodriquez. Citing the stories of Zacchaeus and the blind man, Fr. Soney shows how Jesus doesn’t categorize people. He accepts them as they are. We sometimes don’t live up to that ideal.
Then Jesus is asked which is the greatest of the commandments. He states very simply – “Love God with your whole heart, mind and soul. Love your neighbor as yourself.” From the story of the Good Samaritan, we know our neighbor is anyone in need.
What about loving myself? Do I do that? Fr. Soney recommends two books to help us: Why Am I Afraid to Tell You Who I am and Will the Real Me Stand Up?, both by John Powell, SJ. These were published several years ago but still have valuable insights for us. It is sometimes difficult for us to face our shortcomings. We need to accept ourselves – and love ourselves. This is not selfish, it is being generous with myself.
So the answer is God – Neighbor—Me.
