“Looking Back to Move Forward” with Nick Cataldo, President of the San Bernardino Historical and Pioneer Society Our latest episode takes a deeper look at the history and foundations of the City of San Bernardino. Nick Cataldo is a history connoisseur. When he came to San Bernardino, he was excited to educate the public and preserve the history in Southern California. San Bernardino is named after St. Bernadine, a 14th Century priest. A Franciscan priest from the San Gabriel Mission, Fr. Francisco Dumatz, visited the valley in 1810 and coined the named on St. Bernadine’s feast day, May 20th. Since 1905, San Bernardino has also been known as the Gate City as it was settled by Mormon missionaries from Salt Lake City, Utah.
