Giving Voice with Abraham “AJ” Joven Former Director of Advocacy, Diocese of San Bernardino
AJ is a Filipino Immigrant who came to the United States at the age of 5. He is greatly aware of the concerns that surround immigration in the world today as much of the focus directly impacts him and his own family.
AJ grew to become an advocate, a defender for those unable to speak their concerns and struggles as a refugee fleeing difficult conditions which make it impossible for a family to survive in their own homeland. AJ discusses the difficulties that cause a family to move to another country as well as how the Church is working to support asylum seekers coming to California. Migrants have human rights. Scripture has taught us through Jesus’ own personal experiences as an immigrant, ‘he entered lands where he is unwanted’. How can one can still maintain joy in times of crisis?
Immigrants are a vital part of our communities; and we have a role to care for our neighbor and help them discover that joy of life and camaraderie as part of the human race. Advocacy has many lenses – one of presence or as a voice for the voiceless. Which lens will you use to take part as a defender of rights for those in need? Come and listen to this beautiful sharing on how you can share in the work to care for God’s people.
