Afua Kuma’s Jesus with Fr. Jon Kirby, SVD Provincial Superior (USW)

Fr. Jon Kirby has spent the last 36 years in ministry in Accra, Ghana. In his travels, he came across an African woman who beautifully glorifies God in poem, song and prayer.

Afua Kuma was an illiterate Ghanaian woman who was seeking a deeper prayer life. An angel told her in a dream to speak from her heart. The praise and love for the Lord in her heart was set ablaze. No one recognized this style of prayer but it touched hearts and souls. Her prayer is simple and rooted in grace.

Fr. Jon has taken on the mission to translate from the Ghanaian language of Twi into English Afua Kuma’s poems into a book called, “The Surprising African Jesus – The Lost Prayers and Praises of Afua Kuma. In this book, Fr. Jon will share his first-hand experience of Afua in person and through many photos, you will see the amazing work of the Holy Spirit through her gift of prayer.
