Guilt and Shame in Religion

Guilt and shame are aspects of the human person. There is guilt, but also an unhealthy guilt. There is shame, but also an unhealthy shame. Fr. Padovani explains all this and their relationship to religion. He traces shame back to the book of Genesis with Adam and Eve, who had healthy guilt and shame. We need to recognize them in our own lives and heal through forgiveness and self-acceptance.

He then explains “sin”. He says that many don’t know what a sin is any more.  It is when I hurt others, when I hurt myself, and when I don’t do the good I should. He has a theory of Purgatory – that the suffering we go through here on earth is really our Purgatory.
